What is PBIS?

PBIS is a research-based system of interventions to support the positive behaviors of students. The goal is to create a school environment where all students feel safe and connected with the adults around them. This environment structure allows them to achieve their true academic potential.

Tier 1

Tier 1 interventions are for all students in 7th and 8th grade.

  • Explicitly teaching expectations -- students are taught the expectations for behavior in all locations of the school in ways that are engaging and crystal-clear. Assuming that students "should know how to act" is counter-intuitive and sets students and adults up for conflict. Expectations are posted visually, taught through lessons an examples, and reinforced multiple times throughout the school year.
  • Lion Loot -- teachers and other adults in the building reward and encourage the positive behaviors they'd like to see more of by distributing Lion Loot, our version of the elementary's yellow tickets. The adult will praise the student for following the expectations, which in turn inspires others to make good choices. Lion Loot can be used to purchase rewards and treats from the Lion Loot Cart, which visits all 7th and 8th grade WIN times on Fridays.
  • Quarter Awards - middle school teachers choose one 7th grader and one 8th grader per quarter to recieve their special reward. Students receive their awards during our quarter rewards and awards ceremony. The criteria for each award is determined by the individual teacher. Again, this helps to focus on the positive and encourage an enviornment of celebrating the students who are doing things right instead of only calling attention to those who are not following expectations.

Tier 2

Tier 2 interventions are targeted for students struggling in academic or behavioral situations. Typically, students are recommended to this tier due to unexpected behaviors, poor grades, or concerns about socalization.

  • Check-In-Check-Out -- CICO is the "first line of defense" for student success. Students are paired up with a trusted adult who meets with them briefly before and after school to set goals for and review how the day went. Students are given a CICO sheet and required to have each class period teacher sign it, giving them immediate feedback on their performance that day. The ratings are based on the pillars of PBIS -- Respectful, Responsible, Safe, and Caring. The intervention lasts six weeks, and the collected data is used for further decision-making. Ideally, the one-on-one connection and feedback with teachers mitigates behavior and academic issues, and students are released from CICO.
  • SAIG groups -- Social Academic Instructional Groups are small groups of students who struggle with similar things. We offer two different SAIG groups: Classroom Survival and Social-Emotional Management. Students in SAIG groups also follow the CICO process with their sheets reflecting the specific goals of the SAIG group. SAIG groups meet during WIN time or other times students are available and not missing class.
